Sunday Music Spotlight

Alt-J – Calming Music for Panicky Times

Check out Alt-J, a fresh band that has kept me listening on repeat.

Sundays are all about the music, so let’s get right to it. This is the band I haven’t been able to stop listening to this week, and here’s some more information about ’em :

Who is Alt-J?

Alt-J has over five million listeners on Spotify alone, and is made up of three members: Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton and Thom Green.

Where did they come from and where do they go?

Alt-J comes from Leeds, England and they are touring this year from Spain all the way to Ukraine.

Check them out below (:

What kind of music do they make?

It’s hard to put into words the feeling you get from their music, but they are an English band. Their music definitely has some rock and pop influence, but it’s indie-rock with an alien-type aura. They’re definitely similar to to other bands like Local Natives and Grouplove.

Why do they make music?

They said in an interview in 2018 that they don’t try to make music that sounds any specific way, Joe Newman said that they like to make music that “excites us” and that they want it “to grow quite naturally.” They love making music because they know they don’t have a specific sound they have to stick to, and that’s most likely why I have a hard time pinning down what genre they actually belong to, and I honestly love it.

When did they first come out?

The band first formed in 2007, but they released their first “official” album, their debut if you will, in 2012.
